Facebook, Twitter, YouTube … everyone has a favorite. How does your No. 1 pick stack up?

Ninety-one percent of college professors use social media for professional development and in the classroom, according to a recent study conducted by Pearson Learning Solutions.

More than 940,000 college professors participated in the study, “Teaching, Learning, and Sharing: How Today’s Higher Education Faculty Use Social Media for Work and for Play.”

Participants revealed the tech tools they used most:

  1. YouTube (57%)
  2. Facebook (45%)
  3. Blogs (38%)
  4. LinkedIn (33%)
  5. Wikis (28%)
  6. Twitter (13%)
  7. Flickr (11%)

The study also revealed that although Facebook came in 2nd on the “use” list, researchers found that the frequency of Facebook use is much higher. For example: Eleven percent of profs said they use Facebook daily, while only 4% use YouTube every day.

I use Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube. I also use Google Docs, Sites, Gmail and Picasa. I would never use facebook with traditional aged students; it is too much of an uncontrolled environment. I like to interact with family, friends and coworkers. I do have several FORMER students on Facebook, including an Iraq war veteran who shared his pictures of Iraq on FB. However, I read stories about 22 year old first year teachers trying to use FB with third graders and SHUDDER. Bad idea.

Facebook is a bad idea with K-12 students! However, several teachers I know have had tremendous success with edmodo–it is more of a controlled environment with a FB-like feel.
